As they say in Reservoir Dogs . . .

I'm not sure how I feel about this, but it's interesting so I throw it out looking for comments.

You're listening to my station? *squee* What do you think?

I think tipping as a reward for good service as opposed to tipping as obligation because you know someone is getting paid two bucks an hour is the norm. I know many people who leave a good tip on even the worst service because to do otherwise means the server isn't really getting paid.

And when you really think about the cost of a meal once you include a reasonable tip, it's outragous. And since the restaurant isn't paying wages, they are more or less raking in your money.

At the moment, I'm getting a good dose of Neil Diamond.

This is a gray area for me. It seems like a disincentive for good service as everyone gets a tip anyway, and the restaurants are likely to take a big part of that. I always try to tip well unless the service is atrocious, because it's a crappy job.

Is Neil Diamond a bad thing?

I don't care one or the other about tippiong vs service charges. It's all the same to me.

Do you ever read old Doonesbury cartoons? I have a funny image of us recreating Boopsie and B.D.'s wedding complete with Hunga! :)

As someone who works for tips, I tend to fall on the "tipping" side of the fence. The less money the powers that be get their hands on, the less they can keep for themselves.

On the other hand, the service charge thing would mean you'd still make money from the cheap (ie, rich) people.
