Bellman & Black: A Ghost StoryBellman & Black: A Ghost Story by Diane Setterfield

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A haunting story about how one event as a child has repercussions through the rest of a man's life. Set in Victorian England, the author does a good job filling the book with a sense of growing menace while spending a lot of time on details of Bellman's life. As a result of that level of detail, I found the book a bit awkwardly paced and sometimes a bit dull, but the tone made me want to keep going, to figure out what was happening and what was going to happen. There is some beautiful writing in it, and interesting ideas, but I felt like it could have been stronger.
