What Narcissism Means to MeWhat Narcissism Means to Me by Tony Hoagland

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Tony Hoagland is one of the most interesting poets writing today. His first two books, Donkey Gospel and Sweet Ruin, are classics of contemporary poetry in my opinion. In this, his third book, Hoagland tackles the question of what it means to be an American, an especially interesting question when the book was first published in 2003. He does this through careful observation of the details of modern life and through conversation. As the title implies, Hoagland finds some ugliness and he is unafraid to confront it or put it out in the open. It's hard to tell if Hoagland is talking as himself or creating a character in his poems (perhaps it varies by poem). While not as strong as his previous books, this one is still interesting and insightful and worth reading.
