Fun Home: A Family TragicomicFun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A graphic memoir of Alison Bechdel's relationship with her father, who was gay and who killed himself soon after she came out as a lesbian and her mother asked for a divorce. As he was an English teacher and Alison and her family are all readers, the book is full of literary allusions and wonderful art, but it never loses the real human story and tragedy of her father's story. Highly recommended.

Are You My Mother? Are You My Mother? by Alison Bechdel

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

While the title indicates that this will be the companion piece to Fun Home, analyzing the author's relationship with her mother, this book is actually something quite different. As with Fun Home, it is full of literary allusions and lots of self-analysis as it examines the relationship, but there are two critical differences: (1) Her mother is still alive and (2) the burden of her relationship with her father and her writing a book about it weigh heavily. It took me a little while to find my footing with this book, but once I did, I think I enjoyed it more than Fun Home. It's about the difficult creative process and coming to terms with difficult relationships. Again, highly recommended.
