The joy of movement

Tuesday night, I took my first mixed martial arts class. It was a killer workout and I had a good time.

I went in having no idea what to expect. I bought a Groupon a couple of months back and it was due to expire. I thought I'd see a bunch of young tough guys, aspiring to be even tougher. And, (perhaps this was my inner lawyer kicking in), I didn't think we'd do much, probably stand around a lot while the real guys did the work.

Instead, we start by learning how to get out of a chokehold. Which means either getting put in or putting someone else in a chokehold. Then you either dump them over your side or lift them off their feet.

In short, it was fun and I'll be back next week.

MMA is just one of many active activities (that sounds redundant, but really isn't) I've been doing lately. I went to MMA after work. Before work, I had gone for a 3-mile run and that's about as short as they get these days. One of my colleagues commented about how much I'm doing right now. I think this is the full list:

MMA - I expect to go once a week. Maybe twice, time permitting. Of course, it's been two days since that class and I'm still sore so we'll see.

Running - I'm currently training for a half-marathon in November which means I run 4 or 5 days a week. As the days get shorter, it gets harder to get out of bed in the dark, but I know I'll feel better if I do. I've been doing pretty well.

Swimming - I've been taking swimming lessons for the last month. I never learned as a kid. I started because I wanted to be comfortable in the water before we went to Cancun. I'm continuing, though, because I'm starting to really enjoy it. Despite my soreness and despite my 6-mile run this morning, it felt good to get in the water.

Ballroom dancing - rosepurr have been learning to ballroom dance at a new studio here in Nashville. We've had a blast. It's one of these things both of us always wanted to do and now we're doing it. I am having more fun with it than I imagined I would. We're going tonight, in fact. Yes, still sore from MMA, 6 mile run, swimming lesson, and now dancing.

Guitar lessons - This is the least active of my current hobbies/activities, but it involves muscles and doing something different. I sound a whole lot better.

I replied to my colleague that, pretty much these days, if I'm not at work, I'm moving. And it's a good thing. There are times I just want to rest up and relax, but many of these things do relax me - or, perhaps more correctly, help me relax. It's ironic, I guess. It's more relaxing to keep moving than to just stop.

In fact, when I stop - which is pretty much when I'm at work - I get frustrated and restless. I can't just sit there anymore.

Busy-busy! Sounds awesome!

This post is inspiring to me--I have felt in a rut lately--mostly because all I do is work and soccer (not play, but run the program and coach). That keeps me busy, but not really "active". And work not because it's so time consuming, but because there's not much else going on. I need to fix that. Glad to hear about the swimming lessons--I should do that too. If they offered anything like that here, that'd be great. Part of the reason I'm limited in activities--we have a severe lack of available ones around here.

Good. It's harder there, and it's only going to get harder with the weather changing. But you have to. It's what I tell myself when I get up before the sun.
