English major suffering

Today's Dilbert both amused and saddened me. Boo, having to genuflect before the mighty technology gods and having to demean the fact that you like to read and think.

I still haven't gotten used to all the razzing that literature people get...... I will be the red-headed stepchild of the academic world....*sigh*

Computer people are so condescending if you don't understand computers. But a computer is just a tool, a machine designed to perform certain tasks, same as a toaster. I don't understand how my toaster works. I don't need to--I put bread in it and it makes toast. If the toaster breaks, I could hire someone to fix it, or I could buy a new toaster. Same with computers. Once upon a time, when toasters were new, I bet being able to fix a toaster made you seem pretty special. Now it's not that big a deal. The same thing will happen with people who major in computers. They feel superior now, because computers are novel, but give it a few years. Whereas literature has been around forever, and will continue to be around forever, and will never fade in importance.

That's what I used to tell my computer science major friends. It pissed them off. It was entertaining.
