The Shadow of SiriusThe Shadow of Sirius by W.S. Merwin

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for poetry, and for good reason. These poems, often heartbreaking but beautiful, wash over the reader and carry him/her off in a wave. There is no punctuation in any of these poems and, other than line breaks, no other indication of rhythm. That makes them, at first, challenging, but they also give the poems a quality of being carried off with them and caught in the moments the poems describe. Often lush, sometimes bleak, always beautiful. Highly recommended.
