A Special Place: The Heart of a Dark MatterA Special Place: The Heart of a Dark Matter by Peter Straub

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This novella expands one of the most interesting and disturbing subplots of the author's A Dark Matter novel. Burgeoning psychopath Keith Hayward is taken under the wing of his uncle Till, who is the police's top suspect in the torture and murder of area women. The subplot was brutal and creepy, and this novella only adds to those feelings. I'm not sure how well it would stand up without the novel as background (I read it earlier this year), but it's a short terrifying little story, a glimpse into the mentoring of sadistic murderers.

Yes, more of an extended deleted scene or outtake.

That's a great way to put it.
