Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter: A NovelCrooked Letter, Crooked Letter: A Novel by Tom Franklin

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved this book. A college aged girl disappears in rural Mississippi. The circumstances bring up memories, some good, most bad, for Larry Ott, a white man accused of another girl's disappearance many years before, and his former friend Silas "32" Jones, a black man who now works as constable in the small town they grew up in. While the mystery is interesting, it's really not that hard to figure out, but that's not the book's focus. Instead, it is about these two people - how they came together and fell apart - amidst racial tension and often horrible circumstances. The characters are incredibly well realized and portrayed. The story and people linger long after the last page. Highly recommended.
