30 Days of Songs, Day 8

Day 8: One band/singer whose popularity you will never understand.

I had a very hard time with this one. Sure, they are plenty of bands I don't want to listen to, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate that someone might.

So I did a Google search to jog my memory for any band I found particularly loathsome. Blender was kind enough to provide a list of the 50 worst band in history to help me figure this out. I disagree with most of these, though. Some of these bands I really like (Toad the Wet Sprocket? Really?) while I don't see the band rosepurr and I heard when we rode the General Jackson (okay, they were probably limited by the fact that no one in their right minds would give those guys a record deal, but still).

Nevertheless, Blender got some of it right. Check out #40.

I'm unable to post the video and, besides, why would I want to? You can find it here.

I hated this song when it first came out. Then I saw the video, and bile poured through me. I hate the dancing kid. I hate the bee suit. I hate the dancing. I hate the humiliation she's put through by the laughs at the beginning, and I hate the band and the video director for trying to make feel bad about her. I hate the way the music sounds. I hate the singer's whiny voice. I hate the band's blatant attempt to cast themselves in hippie mode (long hair in a field of flowers - my ass!), when really they just made a really horrible pop song that has nothing to do with the 60's at all. In the early 90's, they were several really annoying bands that proved to be one hit wonders (Thank God, though they didn't deserve that much) that cast themselves that way. (I'm sneering at the thought of Edie Brickell and her damned new "bohemians.")

Despite my opinion, Blind Melon was huge when this song hit, and they only got more popular when one of its members OD'd. And now they have nostalgia on their side. Lots of people I knew like(d) them. My wife likes them.

I just don't get it. But radio stations everywhere be warned, if you play this song, I'm changing the station. I'll accept static before that.
