Badwater!

For those who don't follow such madness, this week was the annual Badwater run. Badwater is an ultramarathon ("ultra" means anything past the traditional marathon of 26.2 miles). Badwater may truly be an ultra-ultra. It is often called "the world's toughest foot race."

It's 135 miles. Across Death Valley. In July.

Here's a description of the course copied from the race handbook: "The start line is at Badwater, Death Valley, which marks the lowest elevation in the Western Hemisphere at 280’
(85m) below sea level. The race finishes at Mt. Whitney Portal at 8,360’ (2533m). The Badwater course covers three mountain ranges for a total of 13,000’ (3962m) of cumulative vertical ascent and 4,700’ (1433m) of cumulative descent. The Portal is the trailhead to the Mt. Whitney summit, the highest point in the contiguous United States."

As I've mentioned, I'm currently in training for my first marathon. While I expect to never run Badwater, I find it inspiring. Sure, all distance runners have a touch of insanity. But I think that touch of insanity is, ironically, what keeps us sane. And keeps us running. (Same thing.)

So when I'm out there digging down to find energy for mile 22 or something, or even just on a training run that's kicking my butt, I'll take inspiration from the bad-asses who run Badwater and I'll get through.

I just started running not that long ago. Badwater both inspires and terrifies me.
