Firmin: Adventures of a Metropolitan Lowlife Firmin: Adventures of a Metropolitan Lowlife by Sam Savage

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Firmin is a rat who grows up in a bookstore in Boston. Unlike his brethren, he becomes literate and very well-read. As Scolley Square, where the bookstore and Firmin reside, declines and is condemned, Firmin faces the constant fear of his own extinction.

This is a beautifully written short novel about literature and life and how we treat one another. It is heartbreaking, but highly recommended.
