Among other things, I oversee the circulation department of my law library (it's fun to think of it as "my" library). On rare occasions, such as this evening, I cover the circ desk. Especially at times like this, I enjoy it.

Tomorrow is the last day of law school exams for the semester. There is only one scheduled - Intro to Accounting. Which is an elective and not a first-year course. So while the library remains open, most students are gone. We have two full-timers who cover the desk regularly, but then it's all students. The full-timers are gone for the day and we had a little trouble getting coverage by students. Hence, I sit at the desk. But a student arrives as I'm scheduled to leave.

It's all good.

Sometimes, being a professional librarian takes you away from some of the things most people probably think librarians do, like shelving or checking out books. I try to do some of that sometimes. (BTW, to date, I've only shushed two people, both lawyers who were talking on their cell phones.) It helps me to keep grounded, reminds me what we really do here.

It helps me see what people actually use. So much of our collection gathers dust. It can be depressing at times.

Most of my time is spent on administrative stuff. I sit in a lot of meetings where I don't have much input. Some days I teach, whether in the formal atmosphere of a classroom or at the reference desk or in a professor's help (they are the ones that often need the most help). I choose books and databases to purchase or cancel. I have to keep up on technological, legal and news developments. There's always something I could be doing.

And right now I'm sitting at the circ desk, waiting for quitting time. Enjoying the quiet, catching up on some blogs (both professional and not).

And US News just called librarian one of the best careers of 2009. Huzzah!

I love things like this entry that give me a picture of who my brother is, aside from being my brother. :-)

I guess a little, although none of what I hear surprises me. Is that good or bad????

I'm not sure. :P

I work the desk a lot, actually. I like it because I encounter so many database, computer, and printing problems that I wouldn't have known about otherwise. The anti-desk librarian mentality annoys me.

YAY! We're the next generation of librarians and we rock.

I've been considering applying to work at our library next semester. This makes me want to do so even more. I worked at the library for awhile as an undergrad, and though my boss was insane and ruined it for all the part time employees, the job itself was fun.

YAY, I'm glad to be encouraging.

Boo, insane bosses. I don't have one, fortunately, and I hope I'm not one. But they often abound in libraries. :(
