Leather Maiden Leather Maiden by Joe R. Lansdale

My review

rating: 4 of 5 stars
I love Joe R. Lansdale's writing. I read a review that called it "redneck noir" and that fits aptly. Even though I figured the mystery of this one out pretty quickly, Lansdale keeps the story fresh and the pace quick, and his language pops. A fun read.

Marvel Zombies Marvel Zombies by Robert Kirkman

My review

rating: 3 of 5 stars
When the superheroes of an alternate version of the Marvel universe become zombies, their hunger wipes out humanity in short order.

It's an intriguing concept, but all that's here is a zombie story. There's no real development of how these characters deal with their transformation. You could substitute anyone for the characters here; it seems more like marketing. The story is entertaining enough as far as it goes.

Joe Lansdale's from my hometown -- small world :) I tried to read one of his one time -- Zeppelins West, I believe it was -- and it was just not really working for me. What should I read instead, to 'get' Lansdale? This one? Something else?

This one would be a pretty good start. I would stick with the mysteries to start. This one, or Freezer Burn (which I really liked) or any of the Hap Collins & Leonard Pine series (you don't need to read them in order): http://joerlansdale.com/bio.html I've heard The Bottoms is his best, but I haven't read it yet.
