Back at the Ryman

Last night, rosepurr saw Old Crow Medicine Show at the Ryman. The crowd was rambunctious and rowdy, in a good way. They were totally into the music, singing, clapping and tapping along. The band was clearly in throes of ecstasy, playing the Ryman for their hometown crowd.

There's something so wonderfully genuine and pure about their music that a lot of people relate to in this era of virtual living and phoniness. The new album, of which they played more than half, is great. I hadn't heard anything off it yet, but now it's on the "to buy" list.

In a perfect Nashville experience, the band brought out living legend Cowboy Jack Clement who sang a couple of his standards with the band. His voice still has a whiskey-tinged purity to it and the band was having a grand old time.

The opening act for OCMS was the awesome Carolina Chocolate Drops. All three members of the band are gifted, versatile musicians who kept changing which instruments they played. They are also walking encyclopedias of musical knowledge and history as well. They got the crowd up, especially when they performed this:

A great night for some great, great music.

Today we head for the Southern Festival of Books. Go, us!

[BTW, rosepurr has posted some more videos of both bands here (friends locked), if you want more. And who can blame ya?]

I cannot recommend Tennessee Pusher more highly. Caroline and Highway Halo are currently my soundtrack.
