The Road

In case you haven't heard, Oprah Winfrey picked The Road by Cormac McCarthy for her most recent selection to her Book Club. I know there are people out there who only read what Oprah tells them, and they're likely in for a rude awakening with this one. I read it last year and, while it's an excellent book, it's incredibly dark. Oprah tends toward the hopeful, and while this book offers that, it is the thinnest glimmer. McCarthy is a fantastic writer and this will give him and this book more exposure, which is good.

I'm just waiting for the shocked people. :)

EDIT: After I wrote this, I discovered that Jennifer Weiner has some interesting comments about Oprah's book club.

I'm not a huge Oprah fan, but I respect that way she recommends the books she likes, whether or not they're what her fans expect. Like when she recommended Anna Karenina--that one's not exactly a barrel of laughs either.

True, true. Oprah's done a lot for reading in this country. (Which is more than I can say, for example, of No Child Left Behind.) Even if people only read what she recommends, at least they're reading something.
