Today is Groundhog Day. While this day served as inspiration for an entertaining movie, I really don't like it.
In Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, some heartless bastard yanked a hapless critter out of its cozy hole and tormented it for several hours so the press, which bolsters the economy of the otherwise forgettable town for two days in the midst of winter, could photograph it. According to the article, it's a German tradition. Tradition, though, I'm convinced, is rarely a reason to do anything.
I propose a new version called Bear Day. Instead of tormenting a hibernating groundhog, I challenge them to go into a hibernating bear cave and ask the bear. If he eats you, six more weeks of winter (well, I suppose not so much for you). If he comes out like Winnie the Pooh, then I suppose an early spring is coming soon. It will serve two purposes - one, they will have to give second thought to tormenting sleeping critters and two, I will actually root for winter. ;)
I support hibernation.
Today, Phil did not see his shadow, thus alleging that spring will arrive early. The weather forecast on TV says the temperature will drop below 0 this weekend. I remain unconvinced that Phil is the
