Against the CountryAgainst the Country by Ben Metcalf

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

An interesting, if overwritten, novel about a man's remembrances of his terrible young adulthood and contentious relationship with his father and others in Goochland, Virginia. It's a long rant with some funny anecdotes and thematically dismisses the notion of country life somehow being more ideal or virtuous than town or city life. As someone who grew up in a rural area and moved on, I found a lot to relate to and some of it hilarious, even if the book's style is sometimes off-putting and tries to hard for sophistication and perhaps even Faulknerian pretense.
