The Best American Essays 2014The Best American Essays 2014 by John Jeremiah Sullivan

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Every January my book club's first read of the year is the prior year's Best American Essays collection. I was very excited that this year's collection was guest-edited by John Jeremiah Sullivan. This year's collection, however, is not as strong as prior year's. There are some fantastic, moving essays in this collection, However, there are a couple of clunkers. Sullivan talks in his introduction about his approach to the task and it shows in his choices - the collection is full of very personal essays. So, like any anthology, it's a bit uneven and if you're not one for navel-gazing, this collection will not appeal. Still, there are some wonderful essays by sharp writers (in my mind, the essays by Zadie Smith, Wells Tower, and James Wood, among others, are standouts).
