Broken MonstersBroken Monsters by Lauren Beukes

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In modern-day Detroit, a serial killer is creating hideous works of "art." Half of a young black man is found crudely attached to the lower half of a deer. The killer's dark, twisted vision is something of a reflection of the urban decay of the city. The novel follows the killer and the people investigating him - a smart cop who is raising a teenage daughter on her own and a writer-turned-journalist/blogger. While it took me a bit to get into it (even with the jarring opening), this novel is well-written and smart, fully developing its characters and locale and making sharp observations about life in contemporary America, particularly Detroit. Recommended for those who are not faint of heart or stomach.
