Goodbye to All That: Writers on Loving and Leaving New YorkGoodbye to All That: Writers on Loving and Leaving New York by Sari Botton

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

An anthology of essays inspired by Joan Didion's essay "Goodbye to All That" by 28 writers - all women - who have come and left New York City. As with any anthology, there is some inconsistency in quality; the best essays, to me, are those by Roxane Gay, Maggie Estep, Emma Straub, Elisa Albert, and Cheryl Strayed. The shadow of 9/11 hangs over many of the essays. For anyone who's ever lived - or tried to live - in NYC, a lot of the themes are familiar - the expense, the culture, the people, the smells, the noise, the expectations vs. the reality. Interesting especially for those who imagine NYC as a literary mecca.
