Where'd You Go, BernadetteWhere'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Bernadette Fox has disappeared, leaving behind her worried daughter Bee and her Microsoft workaholic husband. She hates Seattle and the "gnats," the cloying group of locals who she is forced to interact with. This novel is at times very funny with some quick-witted observations about contemporary life and the culture of privilege. Perhaps it's a testament to the author that the characters are so well-drawn that even though many of them are terrible people, they are also believable. As a result, I often found the situation a bit more sad than comedic. Still though, an enjoyable read as Bee investigates her mother's disappearance.
