The Signature of All ThingsThe Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Well-written and fully realized, this novel follows Alma Whittaker, daughter of the richest man in Philadelphia in the early 19th century. The novel is about the fullness and trials of Alma's full life, her relationships with her family and her husband, and her passion for the study of mosses. Gilbert has used her strengths in writing non-fiction here to research her time period, but that never bogs down the story. The characters feel very real and engaging. Recommended.
