Ella Minnow PeaElla Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A fable that will appeal to lovers of words. Ella lives on the island of Nollop, just off the coast of South Carolina. The island gets its name from Nevin Nollop, the man who wrote the sentence "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog," a short sentence that includes all the letters of the English alphabet. When the letters start falling off a monument to Nollop, the Council takes it as divine (i.e., from the long-dead Nollop) guidance to begin cutting those letters from the alphabet and begins draconian enforcements of such rules. Told in a series of letters from Ella and her family and friends, this short novel is both funny and sad, as the reader can see how quickly things escalate and how religious fervor in leaders destroys livelihoods and language. Well done.
