The TroopThe Troop by Nick Cutter

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

One of the creepiest books I've read in a long time. On a remote island, five boy scouts and their scoutmaster are on a weekend long outing when an emaciated man arrives at their camp, begging for food. Soon, however, the situation turns horrific and a struggle for survival ensues. The dynamics of the boys, on the cusp of puberty, and their personalities become brutal in this unforgiving scenario. One blurb I've seen online fittingly describes this novel as Lord of the Flies meets 28 Days Later. There are a few missteps; for instance, sometimes I felt like the boys said or did things that weren't age-appropriate. But that is minor and may not even be true (I can't remember what it's like to be that age). It's scary, gruesome, gory, and, ultimately, sad, as the best horror should be.
