The Bookman (The Bookman Histories, #1)The Bookman by Lavie Tidhar

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

In an alternative version of London, Orphan is drawn into a web of intrigue after his fiance Lucy is killed in a terrorist attack by the mysterious Bookman. There is some fun, interesting stuff in this alternative history mixed with steampunk and literary references (e.g., Irene Adler is a major character, the royal family are lizards from space). It borrows heavily from other stories and genres, but it's a pleasurable mishmash. I found some of the writing a bit clunky (and the typos didn't help), especially once the action moves out of London, but overall it was fun and light and entertaining.
