The CoveThe Cove by Ron Rash

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Set in Appalachia during World War II, this is a heartbreaking story about love and hope. Laurel Shelton, believed to be a witch by the local townspeople, lives with her brother Hank in a dark cove. One day, a stranger arrives, playing beautiful music on a flute. A note explains that his name is Walter and he is mute. Soon, Laurel falls in love, but Walter holds a dangerous secret that could cost them all dearly.

Ron Rash writes beautifully and as this story builds to its devastating conclusion, the dark foreboding of the cove consumes the page. As with everything Rash writes, this book is highly recommended.
