What I Talk About When I Talk About RunningWhat I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami

My rating: 2 of 5 stars
This book was a bit of a disappointment. Given the stature of Murakami's novels, I expected some deep insight into running or writing or the relationship between them, this book is largely a diary of his training for the NYC marathon. While interesting at times, particularly when he talks of the discipline needed for both long-distance running and writing novels, it's not terribly insightful or compelling.

That said, Murakami is a strong enough writer to keep it interesting and smart enough to keep it short. I found myself arguing with him quite a bit. I think he trains too much and his frustrations with his performance as he gets older (a major theme of the book) are a product of that. Of course, he has much more experience running marathons than I do, so who am I to criticize?
