Magic's Pawn (Valdemar: Last Herald-Mage, #1)Magic's Pawn by Mercedes Lackey

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The first book of my wife's favorite trilogy. Many younger readers will identify with Vanyel, a young man trying to figure out who he is and learning that that person is in direct conflict with his father's demands. He is sent off to his aunt, a Herald-Mage. Through heartbreak and conflict, he comes into his own and finds strength and power he never knew he possessed.

Lackey's writing is compulsively readable. Fifty pages seem to go by in a heartbeat. Vanyel could easily become a cliche of an emo teenager, but Lackey manages to keep him from falling into that. It's an entertaining fantasy in a well-built world of magic and intrigue.
