Check up

Went to the doctor this morning. Just a standard check-up. I take cholesterol medication (heart disease runs through my family history like wildfire) and I have to get a blood test every six months to make sure it's not destroying my liver. (While that's scary, I've been on it for years now and have had no trouble.)

Last time I went was in March, while I was recovering from my torn calves. I hadn't run in over a month, and the truth is, before the injury, I wasn't running much beforehand, thanks to the winter blahs.

So I left my doctor in shock. I'm twenty pounds lighter and my blood pressure is 50 points lower.

But this check-up isn't the anomaly. The last one was. I wasn't trying to lose weight or get my blood pressure down. Those are added bonuses. I was really just trying to get in the miles (8.5 this morning) for the race - which is two weeks from Sunday. Yes, I feel better for it, but some of that is just the sense of accomplishment rather than the physical conditioning.

That said, she sees too many people who simply expect her to prescribe pills and fix it. She said that. The drugs should be the last resort, though, when the other stuff doesn't work.
