The Hunger Games (Hunger Games Series #1)The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A repressive government in the near future holds the annual Hunger Games, a brutal reality show-style televised contest. Two children from each district are recruited and must play. The winner gets well taken of by the state for the rest of his/her life. The losers all die in the Games. When rebellious 16-year-old Katniss is drafted for the games, the government may get more than just great ratings.

Incredibly paced, this is a book to read in a single sitting. The violence is brutal - and all the more so because of the ages of the participants - but not gratuitous. The author does a great job not capturing a horrific future and the brutal games, but the feeling of being watched at every moment (the arena for the Games has cameras everywhere to capture every moment) and the impetuousness and rebelliousness of being a teenager. Highly recommended.
