The only good thing about being sick the last couple of days was I did get a chance to do a lot of reading (when I wasn't asleep).

Boneshaker (The Clockwork Century, #1) Boneshaker by Cherie Priest

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
During a prolonged American Civil War, an inventor named Leviticus Blue tests his Boneshaker machine, designed to mine gold from under ice, in Seattle. The results are disastrous. Not only are major parts of the city destroyed, but the machine unleashes a poisonous gas from the earth that turns those who inhale it into the living dead.

Years later, Leviticus's son Zeke runs away behind the walled-up Seattle to learn the truth about his heritage. His mother follows.

This is a well-paced, exciting steampunk adventure. The world is flushed out incredibly well, but not at the cost of keeping the story moving and personal. Despite zombies, airships, and all sorts of other mechanical wonders, the characters are what really drive the story.

Highly recommended and lots of fun.
